Copyright at University and Schools

Can I copy material from the internet for research?
1. Check the website for any statements about copyright which may apply to the material you need/want.
2. The copyright owner may expressly allow you to copy [print or download] the material, under stated conditions.
3. If nothing is stated, you can print or save material, if it is being used for study or research, and if the copying is fair.
4. It is not fair or for study if you provide copies of the copied material to other people.

What constitutes research and fair use?
Research means diligent and systematic enquiry or investigation into a subject in order to discover facts or principles. According to the Copyright Act, it is fair to copy:
  • A reasonable portion of text or notated music (10% of the number of pages, 1 chapter)
  • 10% of the number of words of text material published in electronic form or 1 chapter
  • an (and more than one) article from a periodical publication (newspaper, magazine, journal etc)
Can students (university or school) use music in videos that they make?
They will need permission to use someone else's music in a film or video.
