Wk 4 Readings Key Ideas/Activities

Pericles, K. (2008). Happily Blogging @ Belmore South. SCAN, 27 (2), 4-6

Key Ideas:
The use of digital media and technology in the classroom, can have a major impact on the means in which  the classroom is organised, and the way in which it operates.

At Belmore South Public School, blogging is successfully being used in classrooms, as an engaging teaching and learning tool with students. Students are given the opportunity to make online posts, on a topic of their interest, to a blog for the entire class. They work in small groups, allowing them to engage in common group work practices of sharing and selecting ideas, planning etc, however their mode of presentation and organisation is completed online. The reading depicts the effective link between digital media, technology and learning.

Example of a key activity: Two people are sitting quietly to one side, scripts in hand, practising reading the character stories they have written to introduce new characters in a game we are playing. When there is a quiet moment, these two will record their introductions, which will be uploaded to an internet application which produces animated avatars that the students have designed, combined with their own voices. These will be placed on our class blog.

Barone, D., and Wright, T. E. (2008) Literacy Instruction with Digital and Media Technologies. The Reading Teacher, 62 (4), 292-302

Key ideas:

Students need to be prepared for new literacies' expectations. This preparation needs to go beyond the use of simple software. These expectations are to gradually and progressively be integrated into the classroom in order to be applied effectively.

New literacies' will continue to change. The are constantly changing encouraging teachers to embrace and be open to change.

New literacies' are essential in classrooms so that equal opportunities are offered to all students.
